Common Questions
WHAT IS GOLD FILL?
Gold fill is made by heat and pressure-bonding a layer of 14k gold to a brass core. This process is extremely strong and will last decades and even centuries if taken care of properly. Gold is naturally very soft, so bonding it to brass adds strength to our designs. The wonderful thing about this process is that everything you see and touch is 14k gold and always will be, so you don't have to worry about flaking, tarnishing, allergies, or turning your skin green! It also helps use less gold, which decreases the demand for new mines (a bonus for the world!) and decreases the cost.
Gold fill is not the same as gold plate or gold-plated. Plated metal is made by dipping any kind of metal in a very thin coating of gold. This is what you will find at the mall and it flakes and wears off quickly. Normal wear and tear won't impact your gold fill.
Gold fill is naturally tarnish resistant; however it can get dirty or smudged. To keep your gold shiny and glowing, wipe it with a polishing cloth. Gold doesn't normally tarnish unless it's around very harsh chemicals. In the unlikely case that happens, just use a jeweler's polish cloth to wipe it off. The biggest threats to gold fill are abrasives. So avoid scratching the surface with harsh polishers, baking soda, or sandpaper.
IS YOUR SILVER ETHICALLY SOURCED?
We use 100% recycled sterling silver that is milled in the American Southwest.
HOW DO I KEEP MY SILVER SHINY?
Sterling silver does darken with time which can be very beautiful. If you prefer your silver bright and shiny (as we do!) you can use a polishing cloth to gently buff it clean. If you're in a pinch, a bit of baking soda and a soft cloth with also work.
Leaving your silver in a humid environment or at the bottom of a jewelry box is one of the quickest ways to make your silver tarnish. Lucky for us, wearing silver jewelry actually slows down the rate of tarnish and oxidation and keeps the metal bright and shiny!
HOW DO I CARE FOR BRASS?
Our brass is the highest graded alloy and it comes from mills in the American Southwest. Brass is a very similar color to 14k gold but is a harder material and more resistant to scratches.
We wax all of our brass to slow the rate of tarnish, but natural brass does have a tendency to patina and darken with time. We love this about brass, but if you'd like to keep it in its shiny state, you can easily polish it with a polishing cloth. You can also wipe your darkened yellow brass piece with a solution of white vinegar and salt to dissolve the discoloration. It will make your fingers smell like vinegar, but it's handy when you don't have a polishing cloth handy!
We never use brass in our ear posts, ear wires, chains, or rings, since direct contact with the skin can cause a green reaction. It is completely harmless, but annoying, so we avoid it altogether!
WHAT IS WHITE BRASS?
Sometimes called Nickel Silver or German Silver, this alloy is made with brass and nickel to give it its silvery color. It does not contain actual silver. It is very hard, resistant to scratches, and stays shiny for a long time. It will develop a patina with time (albeit slowly!). It can be polished with one of our polishing cloths. White brass does not like contact with chlorine. Our white brass is milled in the American Southwest.
If you have a nickel allergy, it is not advised to have direct skin contact for long periods of time with this metal. It is still okay touch the metal if you have an allergy. Nickel is not harmful unless you have a nickel allergy, and even then, the allergy will subside if the metal is removed from your skin. We only offer white brass hair pins to minimize skin contact.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY JEWELRY?
Jewelry is not indestructible. Take care to avoid sleeping in your jewelry, swimming in it, and avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals. It is best to hang necklaces to avoid tangles or store chains in a zip top baggie with the clasp hanging out. The baggies will prevent tangles and tarnishing.
Storing jewelry in a humid space will accelerate tarnish, but it is easily cleaned with a polishing cloth.
Do not use polishing cloths or any chemicals on the surface of stones. Instead, wipe them with a soft cloth.
I ORDERED THE WRONG RING SIZE! CAN I EXCHANGE IT FOR A DIFFERENT SIZE?
Absolutely! We offer a one time free ring resizing. Find out how to take advantage on our returns page. If you need help determining your ring size, please use the sizing chart.
HOW IS THE JEWELRY PACKAGED?
All jewelry is shipped in post-consumer recycled jewelry boxes, tied with a bow. We do not ship an invoice or a receipt on domestic orders to save paper. The jewelry is sent in a post-consumer recycled bubble mailer small enough to fit in most mailboxes and through most mail slots.
If it is a gift, leave a note when you checkout and we can include a message from you.
DO YOU MAKE CUSTOM DESIGNS?
We can modify sizing and chain length of our jewelry at no extra cost. Just send an email to hello@favorjewelry.com to double check before ordering. We are not accepting orders on any truly custom and original designs at the moment.
